Jerzy Popieluszko was a Polish Roman Catholic priest who became a symbol of resistance against the communist regime in Poland. He is most known for his strong support of the Solidarity movement and his outspoken sermons that criticized the oppressive policies of the communist government.

Father Popieluszko was born on September 14, 1947. He was known for his „Masses for the Homeland”, where he preached about human rights, dignity, and truth.

On October 19, 1984, he was abducted, tortured, and murdered by agents of the Security Service (SB). His death shocked the nation and strengthened the anti-communist opposition. He was beatified by the Catholic Church on June 6, 2010, in Warsaw. He is considered a martyr for the faith.

Jerzy Popieluszko is remembered as a hero of freedom and human rights. His life and death played a crucial role in mobilizing public opinion against the communist regime in Poland. Numerous streets, schools, and churches across Poland bear his name. His grave at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Warsaw remains a major pilgrimage site. 

The exhibition “The Decalogue of Father Jerzy,” available in several languages, was prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance in 2024. In 2025, the exhibition was presented in Hungary and France. Soon it will be presented in Norway, in Mariaholm near Oslo, where the world’s first monument to Blessed Father Jerzy stands.
